Hymness' guide to leather care

Leather is a natural material that has been used for thousands of years – and for good reason, as it has some amazing properties. There are many different types of leather and their quality. Durability, color transfer, flexibility and resilience depend largely on how the leather has been tanned and treated.

Although there are general tips for leather care, some leather finishes, such as nubuck, have a special look and therefore require different care to maintain the finish.

Our leather care guides are adapted to the leather we use for Hymness' products and prepared in consultation with our Portuguese tannery.

Leather care

3 simple steps
  1. Clean the leather of dust and dirt with a soft cloth.
  2. Apply a small amount of leather grease with a dry cloth or sponge in circular motions.
  3. Let it soak in and wipe off any excess leather grease.
Therefore, you should take care of your product

Your leather products are a natural product and can be compared to a wooden table or your skin. A well-treated and saturated product is more resistant - Remember that appropriate use of products and proper care go hand in hand.

How to care for wet leather

How to take good care of your leather product
Leather is a living material with natural properties – and therefore requires a little care so that you can enjoy it for many years.

At Hymness, we only use a light surface treatment that protects the leather from dirt and moisture – without sealing it in. It preserves the leather's natural breathability and flexibility.

The leather is water-resistant , but not waterproof. This means that it can withstand a little rain, but it should not be placed in direct water – such as a puddle or a soaked surface. If leather gets too wet, it can become stiff and lose its suppleness.

If the leather gets wet:
✔️ Wipe it gently with a soft cloth
✔️ Let it air dry naturally – away from a wood-burning stove, radiator or hair dryer
✔️ Give it time – half to a full day is best
✔️ Avoid rapid heating as it can make the leather stiff and damage its structure

When leather dries, it may temporarily feel a little stiff – but don't worry, it will soften again when you use the product.

Worth knowing:
✔️ Leather may darken when wet
✔️ Water with lime or salt can cause marks or rings
✔️ This also applies to textiles – avoid placing products directly on wet surfaces.

After drying – care with leather grease:
✔️ Use a soft cloth and apply a good layer of leather grease
✔️ Let it soak in for about an hour
✔️ Then wipe off excess grease
✔️ Has the leather absorbed it all quickly? Then it needs more

Which leather conditioner should I use?

Like our own skin, leather needs moisture to prevent drying out and possible cracking.

Use a transparent leather conditioner - without color - and apply it with a soft cloth in light, circular motions.

These can be purchased at Hymness, or in most supermarkets.

Avoid using stiff brushes and rough cloths as they can cause unnecessary damage to the leather's surface. Soft brushes and cloths are always best.

Avoid frequent exposure to direct sunlight.

Excessive sunlight can dry out and darken leather. Therefore, store your product out of direct sunlight when not in use. Also, avoid leaving it in bright light for long periods of time – like most other materials, including textiles, leather can be affected by too much direct sunlight.

Prevent scratches and stains

Scratches and stains may occur with use, but in many cases they can be reduced or treated with leather conditioner. Apply the conditioner in circular motions to reduce visibility. How quickly and how much wear occurs depends on how you use your product. If in doubt, please contact us for advice and guidance.

Storage - when you are not using your product

To maintain the shape of your bag, you can stuff it with newspaper or tissue paper and store it in a breathable fabric bag (dustbag). Avoid plastic bags as they can trap moisture and cause mold on the leather.

Caring for the back of the leather

Care of the back of the leather - on products where it is visible.

If you have a Hymness product with the back side visible, you should avoid leather conditioner and damp cloths as these can alter the natural look. The same goes for Nubuck and suede, which should be treated in the same way.

Instead, use a soft brush to remove dirt and refresh the surface. If the leather is exposed to dust and dirt, you can use a waterproofing spray, such as you know from shoes.

Take good care of your products

With our product care guides, you get all the best advice for taking good care of your leather goods, jewelery and textiles. Proper care will help you extend the life and preserve the beauty of your favorite products so that you can enjoy them for many years.

If your products start to look tired and worn, it's a sign that they need a little extra love and care. How quickly they change appearance depends on how often and how you use them. We therefore recommend that you treat your products gently if you want them to last longer - just as we ourselves need care and maintenance. Good care is therefore as much about good habits as the product itself.
