Guide to Leather Care
Leather is a natural material that has been used for many thousands of years - and for good reason, as it has some fantastic properties. There is a big difference between leather types and their quality. Durability, color transfer, flexibility and resistance depend to a large extent on how the leather has been tanned and finished.
Although there are general tips for leather care, some leather finishes, such as nubuck, a special expression and therefore requires a different care to preserve the finish.
Our leather care guides are adapted to the leather we use for Hymness' products, and prepared in close collaboration with our tannery.
General Tips for Caring for Your Hymness Leather Products
Leather types may have different care needs depending on the finish. For example, nubuck requires different care than smooth leather. It is therefore important to follow the correct instructions so that your product retains its original appearance.
Avoid moisture and water
Leather can become discolored and stiff if exposed to too much moisture. Should the leather get wet, wipe it gently with a soft cloth and let it air dry naturally, away from direct heat sources.
Avoid using hair dryers, stoves or the like! If you have a mobile dehumidifier, it can be placed nearby, but it is not necessary. A half to full day 'slow-dry' drying time is best for the product. The leather may feel a little stiff after drying, but will regain its flexibility when you start using it again.
Hymness' leather has a transparent surface treatment that helps protect the leather from contamination and moisture. Genuine leather is breathable, and therefore the surface treatment on our leather is not waterproof (membrane), as this would work against the leather's natural properties. But leather is water-resistant – to a certain limit. For example, if you put the bag in a puddle, it will be inappropriate use.
Regular Moisturizing Care
Just like our own skin, leather needs moisture to prevent drying out and eventual cracking. Use a transparent leather conditioner, specifically developed for leather, and apply it with a soft cloth in light, circular motions. Avoid using stiff brushes and coarse cloths as they can damage the leather's surface. Take care of the leather by avoiding unnecessary wear and hard tools.
Storage – Take care of the shape
To keep the shape of the bag, you can fill it with newspaper or tissue paper and store it in a breathable fabric bag (dustbag). Avoid plastic bags as they can trap moisture and cause mold on the leather.
Scratches and Stains
Scratches and stains may occur with use, but in many cases they can be reduced or treated with leather conditioner. Apply the conditioner in circular motions to reduce visibility. How quickly and how much wear occurs depends on how you use your product. If you are in doubt, contact us for advice and guidance.
Avoid Sunlight
Excessive sunlight can dry out and darken the leather. Therefore, store your product away from direct sunlight when not in use. Also avoid leaving it in bright light for long periods – like most other materials, leather can be damaged by too much light.
Specific Advice for Nubuck and Leather's Raw Back
If you have a Hymness product where you enjoy the beautiful and raw back of the leather or a nubuck product, you should avoid leather conditioners and damp cloths as these can change the natural expression. Instead, use a soft brush to remove dirt and refresh the surface. If the leather is exposed to dust and dirt, you can advantageously use an impregnation spray.
